God's word in today's world

You’ve inherited a fortune!

What really gets my blood boiling is when children fight about an inheritance. How many families have been torn apart because one person claimed too much when the inheritance was distributed? I really have to commend my mom on this one. One day, about 20 years before she died, she called all the children together. We had to choose what we wanted and it had to go on a list. The day she moved to the retirement home, each of us had to go and pick up their pieces. The rest of her estate was shared equally among us. That was it.

Children must remember it’s a privilege to inherit, not a right. If there is anything to inherit, that is a gift. You are not more entitled to anything of your parents than anyone else. And if grandma and grandpa have decided this is how it’s going to be, it’s not up to you to make other suggestions. It remains a privilege.

It’s the same when it comes to God. It’s an enormous privilege to inherit from God. The difference is that we get everything that Jesus gets. Stop and let that sink in. You inherit exactly the same as Jesus Christ does. No need to fight about one getting more than the other.

How does that work?

Let’s just think about this first. We don’t inherit automatically, in other words, because we were born into the family. Nor do we inherit, or can we inherit, because we’ve done something on our side. No, we inherit simply because of an enormous amount of love and grace.

Back to the ‘how’ of our inheritance: Jesus is the Son of God and, therefore, He inherits everything. Jesus is God’s heir. We who believe in God and accepted Jesus become Jesus’ brothers and sisters. And voila, now we’re heirs too! Obviously, this happens through the work of the Holy Spirit too.

Because we all get the same, there can be no fighting. No one can be favoured or “punished” because you’ve done your part or not.

7God’s gift has restored our relationship with him and given us back our lives. 8And there’s more life to come—an eternity of life! You can count on this.

Through grace, we all inherit from God and now He is our Father. We inherit eternal life and this includes the privilege to one day go and live in God’s heaven. What a wonderful prospect is that? We no longer need to live with the fear or question of where we will eventually end up. We can say for certain and know that we are free from hell and will be living a tranquil life with God.

That is our inheritance. Wow, that’s the best news any believer could ever receive.

But we don’t only receive our inheritance when we leave this earth. No, we already receive all of this from God. We already inherit love, grace and peace. We can also already share in God’s wisdom, power and truth. All of this is already within our reach.

So sad that we don’t take it up and make it part of our lives. I don’t know whether it is because we don’t realise that we’ve already inherited all these wonderful gifts or because we don’t know how to make it part of our lives.

Start believing now that you are an heir of the Almighty God and have already received these gifts. Align your life to God’s will and pray that God’s Spirit will share it with you one by one.

Scripture
Titus 3:3-7

Reflection
What does it mean to you that you are now one of God’s heirs?
How much of your inheritance is part of your life already?
What must you do to make it part of your life?

Prayer
Father, there is no greater gift than to be Your heir. But I do realise that many of the gifts that I’ve inherited do not form part of my life. And I don’t really know how to do that. Please help me with this. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
