God's word in today's world

Your calling is not a hobby

Lewies asks a very good question: Why is evangelism not something done by the whole congregation, but seems to be the hobby of only a few congregation members? If you look at congregations with this question in mind, you see it play out everywhere. There’s just a handful that seriously carries out God’s command to share the message of salvation in the world.

And that’s hard to understand. The message saves people. It frees people. It brings hope to a hopeless world. It gives life. It saves people from the eternal fire. It brings light in the darkness. So why hide it under a bucket?

Paul experienced personally how it felt to be saved from death. He was going the wrong way. His troubles were waiting for him. And then he bumped into God. It was a hard crash, so hard that he was blinded for a few days.

Paul knew the wrong side of life. He knew what was to be the bitter end of that road. That’s why he appreciated his salvation so much more and why he couldn’t keep silent about it. With everything in him he tried to get the message to those who didn’t believe. He was driven by the calling and would’ve done everything to live it. Yes, even if it meant losing his life.

Paul understood exactly what the impact of the Gospel of Jesus was and this moved and motivated him or rather pushed him to share that message with the world. That’s why he drove others to do the same:

8I want you to put your foot down. Take a firm stand on these matters so that those who have put their trust in God will concentrate on the essentials that are good for everyone.

Paul says we must take a firm stand to bring the awesome truth to the world. You see, when you know what the Truth does to you, then you want to, no, then you have no choice but to go and tell it to others too.

If you have the answer in your possession, will you give it to those that have questions? If you see that someone is in danger of falling off the cliff, won’t you stop them?

This isn’t just a hobby for some Christians. It is far too serious a matter. It is a life and death struggle. Yes, people are on their way to destruction. How can we simply look on as it happens?

All of us are called to share the Message out there. Because when others realise too what Jesus had done for them, they will also be driven to share the Message with the people around them.

The Message changes people. It moves people. Then people suddenly want to live differently. They want to live the way God wants them to live. Then the world changes and people see one another. People start looking for places where they can make a difference. People start doing good to others. People start serving others and treating others well.

That’s the net effect of the Message. May you and I do our part to get it out there, not as a hobby, but as a calling.

Scripture
Titus 3:8-11

Reflection
Do you know what God has done for you?
Do you keep the Truth to yourself?
How can you share it in Your world?

Prayer
Lord, I realise I’m too quiet about Your message of salvation. Sometimes I’m uncomfortable or too shy to open my mouth. Please help me to get over my shyness, Lord. I know I have the answer to everybody’s questions. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
