God's word in today's world

WOW moment

My sister’s son worked hard to earn two university degrees. Like many graduates today, het then first taught in the east for a few years to earn some money. On his return to South Africa, he got a really good job.

He could be quite satisfied with his progress up to then. His future looked good. Until the day he drove past the scene of a bad car accident. He stopped immediately and assisted one of the seriously injured people. It was the first time that he was involved with a car accident.

As he drove away, he realised that something was happening to him. He thought about it and realised that this was what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. He wanted to help people in need. He wanted to save people’s lives. That was his life calling.

Shortly thereafter he resigned and signed up for a four-year paramedic degree. I admire him so much for this. I admire him for realising why he was here on earth. He went against the normal course of life, let everything go, and empowered himself to realise his calling.

By this time, we know that each of us has a calling. Each of us received a specific set of talents we have to work with. However, we all have a generic calling, a calling all of us have to live – to save people.

We have to help those who live around not to burn in the eternal fire. We have to show people the right way to go so that they themselves can choose to walk away from the road to death.

16Just keep at it. Both you and those who hear you will experience salvation.

Therefore, the challenge is not only to stay on the road yourself and to reach God, but also the help others get there. This is a command for all of us. Our generic calling.

My sister’s son gets the greatest satisfaction from assisting people in need. Without it not being expected of him, he volunteers at emergency units over weekends. He cannot stop himself from doing so. He burns inside to alleviate other people’s need.

We must be like that too. We must ask God every day to open our eyes to others’ need. Remember, people with spiritual needs hide it. Sometimes people don’t even know that they are in need and are on their way to death. That is why we need to ask God to make us sensitive to see it.

We must take hands with the Holy Spirit so that He can help us to live right. We must live in such a way that others will also long for real life. But even more, we must allow the Holy Spirit to take our hands so that we can help those in need. Those who are spiritually dead. Those who have not reached God spiritually. It is for them that we were called.

I don’t know what to call it, but let’s just say it was one major WOW moment in my life. One day I received an e-mail from a woman who said that she was on her way to end her life when she received a message from Crossroads. and she didn’t go on with the suicide attempt.

That was a big WOW moment in my life.

May there be many WOW moments in your life. May you see people going to hell and may you become a lifesaver with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Scripture

1 Timothy 4:6-16

Reflection

Do you believe that God calls you as lifesaver?
Who around you are on their way to death after life?
How can you save them?

Prayer

Lord, I never thought about it like that before, but I realise there are people around me who are on their way to death. How awful. I want to help them. I can’t just look on while they are on the wrong road. Please show me how to help them. Amen.
