Who wants love and peace?
A doctor phoned me and said he had a man with him who has started writing letters to end his life. He was depressed. The man gave my name to the doctor to fetch him, because he couldn’t be left alone.
Phew, I haven’t seen a man so deep in a dark pit in a long time. He sat there crying with no embarrassment, telling me the stories of his life. A few months ago, his beloved wife left him. Just like that, with no warning. He couldn’t come to terms with it and cried some more. And in a firm, sincere voice he softly said: “Why can’t God let me die? I’ll go in place of the man with cancer”
In a way, he showed me what was inside his heart.
And I had no answers. I didn’t know what to say. I simply listened and tried to ask the right questions so that he could get everything off his chest. That in itself brought a measure of consolation. After a long time, I left. He was somewhat lighter, but his heart and the rest of his being were broken.
It’s terrible to see what we do to one another. We sow hurt. And I’m not saying it was all his wife’s fault. It always takes two to tango and the mistakes we make are mostly shared equally. In a way, we are terribly good at sowing strife and leaving destruction in our wake.
Maybe you’re in the same boat. Maybe not. Maybe your boat is sailing on calm waters. What you have to ask yourself is whether you are doing something to sow peace where there is no peace. Are you the one helping to resolve misunderstandings?
2May God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord show you his kindness and mercy and give you great peace of heart and mind.
Every human being wants to experience love. We cannot run when our petrol tanks are empty of love. Everyone wants to know that he or she has a place in the sun. We want to live in peace. We don’t function well in an environment where there is no peace.
God has more than enough of this love and peace. Unfortunately, many people don’t know about these tanks filled with love and peace. Maybe people know about it, but life has hit them so hard that they no longer believe in it.
We must get to God so that we can experience his love. We must get to God so that his peace can stick to our lives. And then each of us must go and share God’s love and peace with the people around us. They need it.
This guy I was telling you about above, his whole life is falling apart because his love tank is completely empty. His life longs for some peace. And that is why he doesn’t have the strength to go on. He really needs someone to take him by the hand and introduce him to God’s love and peace. It was and is an enormous privilege for me to be able to take his hand.
How are you?
Are you experiencing God’s love and peace?
Where must you sow it?
Heavenly Father, we badly need your love and peace. Many people around us long for it. Please open my eyes and prepare my feet to serve others. I ask this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
