God's word in today's world

Who am I

Casting Crowns’ song Who am I plays over and over in my head:

Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt?
Who am I, that the bright and morning star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart?

Not because of who I am
But because of what You’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done
But because of who You are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I’m calling
Lord, You catch me when I’m falling
And You’ve told me who I am
I am yours

Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love
And watch me rise again?
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me?

Not because of who I am
But because of what You’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done
But because of who You are

It seems like a summarised version of the songwriter’s life. Also of mine and maybe yours too. A summary of how hard we try to live right, but of how often, before we know it, we wander off and get lost. And then we can only wait for God to light the way.

But this is when we realise that we are like flowers that fade quickly, waves tossed in the ocean, vapor in the wind. And what we have on earth is as temporary too.

And when we are safe in God’s arms, protected from the storm, we realise one thing: What I am is pure grace. I can try as hard as I want to. I can have the biggest dreams and work very hard to realise them, but if I’m not surrounded by God’s grace, in other words, if God doesn’t play a role in my life, if I’m not showered with God’s goodness, then I have problems. Big problems.

Let’s be straight with one another: We are 100% dependent on God’s grace and goodness. Without that, life will be a struggle. Without that, we will never have a happy, joyful life. Because of what He has done, because of what He is.

So, let us pray for one another to experience this grace. Let’s ask God to shower our loved ones with his grace, because we need loads and loads of it. And, therefore, I would like to pray for you today: 18The incredible grace of our Master, Jesus Christ, be with all of you!

Shalom!

Where do you need grace in your life?

To whom can you sing this song?
