A friend said that the school governing body that he was serving on had received a long letter from a parent. She said her daughter was being bullied on religious grounds. She demanded that the school immediately stop practicing any form of the Christian religion. The organisation “ogod” had taken six schools to court so that these schools may no longer promote the Christian faith during school hours.
On their website, ogod’s goals are set out as follows:
- Eradicate religious indoctrination through public schools.
- Identify and expose religious counter knowledge and magical thinking.
- Shield children from the psychological dangers of religious damnation.
- Promote a democratic, secular and human rights based South African society.
- Eradicate religious elitism.
I always wonder why parents would put their child in a school when they know that the school’s principles are different from what they believe. There are many other schools in the area where they can go to that might better fit what they believe. Anyway …
As people become more liberated and freer to do and say what they want to, we who believe in God will experience more pressure. People will consciously try and get rid of us. We must pray to God to help us. We are not fighting against flesh and blood, but also in the spiritual world around us.
Paul experienced this himself, and that is why he specifically asked his congregation to pray against it: 2And pray that we’ll be rescued from these scoundrels who are trying to do us in. I’m finding that not all “believers” are believers.
On our own our army is too weak. We cannot take out the enemy with a few gunshots. We need to know who the enemy is. In his comments on e-Sword, Henry explains who our opponents are. He says they are unreasonable and evildoers. They often go against the rules and are inhuman. I would like to add egocentric, because someone who complains that their child is being “bullied on religious grounds” probably cares nothing for all the others who want to live according to Christian principles.
Henry also says: “They act contrary to all reasonable and religious laws and are guilty of the worst absurdity and godlessness.” And it is not a good idea to argue with such people. They are often not open to persuasion.
We can be honest with one another and say that the people who oppose God will not fight clean. They will try any trick in the book to make us lose our way.
Watch out, as you become more serious about the things of God, you will increasingly come under attack. It’s part of the package and nobody can escape it. Therefore, each of us needs to be prepared should the cunning evil one tempt us from the right way. We must prepare ourselves for the fight.
Fortunately, we need not be afraid, because Jesus had already conquered the evil ones at the cross. They’ve been vanquished. We must still pray for protection that God with his angels will support us so that we are not fooled by their tricks. Let’s also pray for one another. Let’s help one another and make sure that we always win the battle.
Reflect on this
Are you ready to withstand evil?
Where have you failed?
Where must you put up guards?
Lord, thank you that we can trust You to protect us against those who do not like the message we proclaim. Please help us to freely continue spreading Your Word, because that is what You want us to do. Amen.
