God's word in today's world

This is my God!

Let’s think a little about who God is. How does one get to know God?

When you look at a painting, it tells you about the painter. Some people know a painter so well that they can tell you the painter’s emotional state or age when that painter painted a specific picture.

Without us realizing it, what we make shows others who we are, or in other words, the things we make tell our story.

In the same way God shows who He is, what his heart looks like, through what He makes. The clever people say God makes Himself known in two ways. One way is through specific revelation, which is the Bible. We get to know a lot about God in the Bible and the Bible gives us a lot of information about his personality, character and what He does.

However, we can also get to know God somewhere else (those clever people calls this the general revelation) and that is through nature. God made everything. 16For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels—everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.

That’s my God!

In the same way that you can get to know the carpenter and the painter through their handiwork, you can get to know God through his handiwork. Just look at Table Mountain. It is big, strong, majestic. Look at all the different animals, their colours, how they’re built, their muscles, their funny ways of doing things. Look at the beauty and majesty of the trees, plants and flowers. Look at the strong streams and waves. Look at the wind blowing strongly or softly. Look at the drops falling from heaven. Look at the powers holding us on earth and allowing solar systems to fly through the universe.

That’s my God!

God made everything. Do you also see an amazing, great, strong, majestic, colourful, sometimes funny, wild, soft, supernaturally intelligent, creative and much-more-than-this God? God is so great that I cannot completely fit my mind around Him. Yes, God is greater than my picture of Him.

That’s my God!

And God is so great that He gave Himself to me. He loves me so much; He is so concerned about me not managing to get to Him that He allowed his only Son to be crucified. God overflows with love.

That’s my God!

That’s my God!

Scripture

Colossians 1:15-20

Reflection

How great is your God?

Do you see God around you?

Do you know God?

Prayer

When I look up at the mountains, I see the Name of the Creator God! When I look out over the the distant plains, I see the Name of the Creator God! When I gaze on the rolling waves, I see the Name of the Creator God! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise God! Amen.
