God's word in today's world

The great due date

When I was young, I never thought about growing old and that one day, everything would come to a standstill. Even less that my life would come to an end one day. It’s probably because we work so hard to make a life in this hard world that you don’t always have time for things like that.

I can’t quite remember when I started realising that my life also has a sell by date. It was probably when we had the kids that I started wondering what would happen to them if I was no longer there to take care of them. It must’ve been my financial adviser’s fault.

Nowadays I think about it often and I realise that I’m closer to my due date than the day of my birth. Even as I drive through the game reserve and see the beautiful old baobab trees, but no young ones, I wonder whether our grandchildren’s children will only have a picture of the tree. Does this species also have a sell by date?

Yes, one day the whole world will reach her sell by date. 26His voice that time shook the earth to its foundations; this time—he’s told us this quite plainly—he’ll also rock the heavens: “One last shaking, from top to bottom, stem to stern.” 27The phrase “one last shaking” means a thorough housecleaning, getting rid of all the historical and religious junk so that the unshakable essentials stand clear and uncluttered.

The world will change completely. The temporary will be gone and only the permanent eternity will remain. There will be peace and humankind’s sinful nature will be gone. It will be a utopia filled with love. How wonderful would that be!

But this scares many of us. I say ‘us’, because we, me included, are hooked on the world so much that we don’t want to go anywhere else. We are afraid of the unknown. And if it’s going to involve a lot of earthquakes and storms, it’s not something to look forward to.

That is human.

However, we cannot allow this warning about a due date to slow us down. Accept your discomfort at leaving all that is familiar behind. Start living a new life where you look forward to meeting God.

Prepare yourself for the shakeup and make sure that you are ready to meet God. Live a life that shows others that you are ready for when your sell by date and that of the world arrive. Help others who are still living in fear and go ahead of them so that they can also put aside their fear.

Hebrews 12:26-27

Do you also wonder when your due date is?
Does that sometimes make you afraid too?
How can you become calm about this?

Father, I must confess I’m sometimes afraid to leave this life on earth behind. Help me not to be afraid, please. Help me not to be so attached to the world that it blinds my eyes to life hereafter. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
