God's word in today's world

Thanks for the full stop!

One thing cannot be disputed: One day everybody will stand before God. Nobody can avoid this. And my stomach turns, because I wonder what I would say.

When I look at my life and see where I, to put it nicely, smashed the boundaries of life, I do not look forward to that meeting. Then I wonder if I could slip in by a backdoor somewhere to avoid this meeting.

Do you feel like that too?

But the Bible is very direct about this. There’s no loophole in the road that every human on this earth have to walk when their time on earth is done: 27 Everyone has to die once, then face the consequences.

The words “then face the consequences” don’t sound very nice. It’s like when someone knows he has broken the law and his advocate won’t be able to get him acquitted. He knows what the punishment for his actions is and now he is standing in court waiting for the judge to make a ruling. He knows what is coming. He knows his days of freedom are gone, that he will be locked up, and that they’ll throw the key away.

One day, all of us will have to stand before God like this, waiting for the ruling on our lives here on earth.

But fortunately, there’s a full stop at the end of verse 27. And our story doesn’t end at the end of the verse. Yes, all of us will have to come before God and hear the judgement of what we had done on earth. But the end of our road is completely different from what we deserve.

Jesus put the full stop there and the result of the judgement is completely reversed. The real fairy tale is revealed in verse 28: Christ’s death was also a one-time event, but it was a sacrifice that took care of sins forever.

Jesus had to die just once and it was enough to prevent us from being sent into eternal darkness and the key thrown away. Just once was enough to pay for all the wrong turns we took.

It’s so simple. So easy to understand, but so difficult for many people to grasp. So many people turn their backs on God. So many people consciously choose not to accept salvation and freedom and don’t care that they’ll be locked up and the key thrown away.

So sad!

Jesus, thanks for the full stop! Thanks for completely reversing the ruling in the court room. And I’ve done nothing to deserve it. Certainly, it makes me happy and because of it, I can face the hardship I have to suffer in this world. My Jesus’ blood flowed and ensured that the judgement in my court case will be in my favour.

Scripture
Hebrews 9:23-28

Reflection
What does your life look like?
What does your judgement look like?
Can others see it in the way you live?

Prayer
Let’s pray again: Jesus, thanks for the full stop! Amen.
