Taking a turnoff
When I look back on my life, I see where I turned off when I shouldn’t have. Some happened by accident, while others were conscious decisions. Those turnoffs weren’t within God’s will for my life.
Fortunately, I turned back from most of those turnoffs. On others I stayed far too long and the consequences hurt. Maybe you can relate to this?
So, when I read the following verse by Paul, I don’t feel so good: 4Because of the Master, we have great confidence in you. We know you’re doing everything we told you and will continue doing it. It seems as if it is in our nature to turn away from the Lord rather than staying close to Him. I read Paul’s letters again and again and I hear and understand what I should do, but when it comes to doing, I often trip.
Why is this so? I know that God’s Spirit is inside me. I know his Spirit came to live inside me on the day that I invited Him in as a small boy. I really, really want to stay on the right road, but before I know it, I’ve taken a turnoff.
We don’t have to go far to find the answer. We must realise that God has given us freedom of choice. A choice between staying on his road or not. We must also realise that we’ve been received and born in sin. These two forms an ambiguous combination and if you give them free rein, you will not end up on the right road.
Therefore, we have to scrutinise every choice we make to see if it will keep us on God’s road or not. We need to make sure that the choice is based on the letters and words of Jesus. And then we must take that exact route.
If we don’t know the Bible, we don’t know the Lord’s way. Then, when we step out in the world, we’re at a much greater risk of going in the wrong direction. It’s no use my head telling me to go in one direction, but my feet are facing in the opposite direction. You’ll never reach your destination if you do that. Eish!
I realise we must make still more time in our lives for God. We must make even more time to spend in God’s Word. Because then God will renew our thoughts, and when our thoughts are renewed, we’ll have the wisdom to keep to God’s ways. We’ll get to our destination and will be able to show others the way.
Think about this
How is your life going?
Which wrong turns are you taking?
Lord, in your Word You say that You are faithful and that You will protect us from evil. I need You to help me be obedient when You lead me. I need your help to make the right choices at the cross-roads in life. Please help me. I ask it in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
