God's word in today's world

Suffering for being without sin

Jesus did not have it easy on earth. He suffered terribly. He was ostracized and rejected. He was falsely accused. He was spat upon and beaten with whips until His blood flowed. In the end, nails were driven through His hands and feet, and He was hung on a cross.

Jesus was tortured to death.

All this because He stood up for the truth. He simply could not conform to the things of the world, even if it would have spared His life. Jesus had to die for the truth. Jesus had to suffer because He wanted to do God’s will.

We sometimes experience seasons where things aren’t easy. Yes, at times we stand up for the truth and then face opposition. If we stand up for the oppressed, the powerful come down upon us. Law and justice struggle to win.

In times like these we need to know that there was Someone before us on earth, who understands well what we are going through: 1Since Jesus went through everything you’re going through and more, learn to think like him. Think of your sufferings as a weaning from that old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way.

We must not only follow Jesus’ example to stand strong, but we must also prepare and make sure that we are ready for the attacks of the world.

In my army days, we prepared ourselves well for the enemy’s attacks. We wore the right clothes and heavy boots with helmets on our heads. Our R5 rifles were clean and oiled to make sure that when the trigger was pulled, the shot would go off. There was no time for fixing a breakdown.

Our Ratel shone. You could eat off the engine. The diesel tank was full. The cannon had no dust on it and the ammunition bins were full of bullets. Everyone knew exactly where to do what so that we were prepared for when the enemy arrived.

You see, the world is actually our enemy. Just as the world was Jesus’ enemy and He suffered until He died, so the world makes war on us. The world also tries to overcome us.

Maybe the world is not trying to kill us all like they killed Jesus. Rather, the world tries to kill us spiritually and to lure us away from the truth so that we will then fall into sin.

We must prepare for this. We must protect ourselves against this so that we do not fall into the trap of the world and begin to sin. We look up to Jesus as our example. We know He suffered but did not sin.

When we suffer because we no longer want to sin, the world doesn’t understand it. Why would you miss out on the good things in life and in addition to that, also suffer? To them, it doesn’t add up.

But for us who want to follow Jesus and live God’s will here on earth, it makes sense. Therefore, we must arm ourselves and be ready for the attacks of the Evil One. If we suffer during the attacks, that’s fine, because our reward is out of this world!

Scripture
1 Peter 4:1-6

Reflection
How much are you suffering?
Is Jesus your role model?
Are you ready for the attacks of the world?

Prayer
Jesus, thank you for Your example. Holy Spirit, help me to protect myself against the attacks of the world. Amen.
