God's word in today's world

Mouse, elephant, eagle and God

I was just thinking about the joke about the mouse and the elephant walking across the bridge. About halfway across the mouse said to the elephant: “We’re making this bridge boom, aren’t we!” What a bold little mouse.

That’s how we have to walk through the world. We must be bold and must know that we can charge anything. Not because we‘re so good. Not because we’re so strong. No, because our God and Father is so strong.

There’s a children’s song that goes like this: My God is so big and so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing that my God cannot do. In the beginning, God made everything, God simply spoke and the world came to be. My God is so big and so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing that my God cannot do!

And that’s our Dad. There’s nothing in the world that can stop Him. No power, no force. The one who came closest was the fallen angel and Jesus sorted him out on the cross and pulled his sting. Yes, the devil has no sting anymore. He is caught in his last convulsions.

Jesus knew this too and went on his way with God’s power. 13I’m charging you before the life-giving God and before Christ, who took his stand before Pontius Pilate and didn’t give an inch …

Jesus knew exactly what the plan was, but also how difficult it was going to be. But nothing stopped Him from taking on that road. He knew his Dad was stronger and more powerful than the mightiest person on earth at that stage. That’s why Jesus could climb the mountain facing Him.

What mountain is in front of you? How steep and impossible does it look? Well, there’s someone who can help you get to the top. God must be part of our lives so that He can help us fight every fight.

Since we started with animals, let’s learn something more from them. Take an eagle. See what he does with a snake. He doesn’t take on the snake while both are on the ground. I suspect the eagle wouldn’t make it, because the snake is simply too quick.

So, what does the eagle do? He catches the snake in his claws and flies high up into the air. Up there the snake has no power, because there is no ground beneath him. He cannot do anything to the eagle. He cannot prevent falling to his death when the eagle lets him go and drops him.

That’s what we must do with our problems. We must take all of them to God. Change the playing field – take your problems to the place where the devil has been vanquished already. Take all your problems to the Strongest in the universe. With Him that problem is as small as a mouse is compared to an elephant.

May you feel God’s protection all around you. May you always know that our God is the greatest. May you be as ready as a mouse. Not because you’re so strong and clever, but because our God and his Son Jesus are on our side and will always help us.

1 Timothy 6:13-16

How big is your problem?
How big are your plans?
How big is your God?

Father, sometimes the attacks simply look and feel too big to deal with. I realise I’m too weak to deal with them myself. Now, I come to shelter with You, because You will help me. All the way. Amen.
