Love is … too great to comprehend
Do you know how great God’s love is for us? Do you know that God’s love for us is so great that we can never fully comprehend it? We can’t get our heads around the love that flows from God to us. God’s love will do anything to ensure that we do not choose against Him. God will literally do anything. He will even go as far as to have his own Son, who in a way is Himself, hang on a cross. Yes, God dies with his Son, driven by his love for us.
18And I ask Him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth!
The King James Bible says it as follows: 19And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Jesus’s love is higher than the highest peak of Mount Everest (8.848km). It is deeper than the 10,91km depth of the deepest sea. Jesus’s love is further than the 40 075km circumference of the earth.
Even this attempt of mine to show how much God loves us falls short. God’s love for us is simply too great for me to comprehend. But I must still try and make a piece of it part of my life, because you see, if I understand a bit of God’s love for me and all that He would do just for me, something happens inside me. When Jesus’ love is released in me, when I see a piece of it and allows it be released in my life, I am changed.
And that is what Paul prays for us – that we will just understand and experience a bit of his love, because then the world will look so different. When Jesus’ love bubbles up in my life, I can’t hurt. I can’t even step on someone’s toes. I can’t hurt others. No, it’s flowers and roses all over the place. And our world really needs that! There is so much hurt and hardship out there. People are bleeding around us. They long for love. They long for some salvation. They long to be showered with the love of Jesus.
Auntie El learnt something about love in her life:
After being married for 39 years I lost my husband. He was in hospital in intensive care for 40 days. I couldn’t cry, because I know the Lord.
All the time while my husband was in hospital, I assured him that I loved him, and every time I had to leave after visiting times to go home or to work, he held onto my hand, not wanting me to go. Every time I assured him that I was not leaving him alone in the hospital, but that I was leaving him in Jesus’ hands and that nothing would happen before I came back. And that I would stay with him for as long as he needed me. Which I did, to the end.
And a thought came to me: “Love conquers the pain of death, God’s love conquers death.” The highest point of our earthly existence is when we discover the love that turns away fear of death.
Love is that one thing that makes us believe in immortality. God is immortal and God is love, and that is why love is immortal.
Now I understand why I couldn’t cry – because I loved him so much that I was prepared to let him go to God.
Auntie El understands a bit about the love. May we do so too.
Therefore, I pray with Paulus for you: 18And I ask Him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth!
Do you understand some of Jesus’ love?
Do you live it to those around you?
Even those closest to you?
Father, how great You are. How great is your love for me! Please let me experience a little bit of it. Amen
