It’s a process
I always thought my faith in God was my responsibility. I had to study his Word rigorously and take in as much as possible of the truth to strengthen my faith in God. But now I know it does not depend on me alone.
Thank goodness, because I won’t make it on my own.
13… God picked you out as his from the very start. Think of it: included in God’s original plan of salvation by the bond of faith in the living truth.
God saw that we’re not strong enough to be left to our own devices. That’s why He gave each of us a Helper, his Holy Spirit, to work in us, to labour with us, to learn with us to get to know God’s dream for our lives.
This dream is the same dream for all of us and that is for us to be holy, in other words, set aside for God. God wants us for Himself. Remember: God is a jealous God and He doesn’t want to share us with something or someone else.
The devil knows this too. Therefore, he tries to push things into our lives to fill up God’s space: cars, houses, money, fame, cash flow, clothes, business, friends, family, bling, parties … Anything you can think of. He fills up our lives to separate us from God. The enemy wants to steal our holiness.
What can we do about it?
Let’s start at the beginning. The day when you chose God He placed his Holy Spirit in you.
I know many of us find this strange, because we haven’t heard the Spirit. But according to the Word of God (Acts 2:38, 11:17), if we confess our sin, if we accept God as our Saviour, then we receive his Spirit. I suspect we’re simply too busy to experience his guidance in our lives.
The Spirit’s work is to help us along the road of holiness. When we invite Jesus into our lives, we unfortunately don’t turn holy automatically. It’s a long road, a long process that we need to go through. It is a growth process where we learn to live more holy, which means that we get rid of the rubbish of the world piece by piece so that we can look more and more like Jesus.
But I don’t sit back passively, letting the Holy Spirit do all the work. No, I have to do something too. I must believe in the truth, which, by the way, is also made possible by the Holy Spirit’s work in me. But where do I find the truth?
Duh, as the kids would say. In God’s Word, obviously.
Yes! That’s right. All the truths we need can be found in God’s Word. We must study his Word continuously and take in as much as possible of the truth. Together with the Holy Spirit holding our hand, our faith in God will grow stronger and we will become more and more available to Him.
Come let us allow the Holy Spirit to do his work in our lives. Let’s make it easy for Him by soaking up God’s truth through his Word.
What does your faith look like?
How close to the truth are you?
How much space does the Holy Spirit have to work in you?
Father, thank you for giving Your Holy Spirit to us a gift. Thank you that He helps us to believe. Amen.
