Invest in God’s bank
18-19Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage—to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life.
Very good friends of ours have a Down syndrome son, Boeta, who needed to move from one home to another. It cost a lot to move him. Although they’ve taken out a number of policies over the years to provide for this, it was still far too little. Friends in town got together and arranged a dance and an auction in the town hall. More than enough was collected that evening!
Many role-players were involved: The four people who picked up the food bill before anything had even started. The people who donated wine and paintings and those who bought it, sometimes far above its real value. The women who gave of their time to do the preparations and administration to make the evening run smoothly for 300 guests.
The many other people who simply gave. The people who bought the precious, handmade patchwork quilt for an enormous amount and immediately gave it to Boeta’s Mom! All these people made a difference in one way or another. All of them carried out a piece of the command and invested money and time and energy in God’s bank.
When I look at that evening, give is written all over it whether it was money, or time, or energy – that evening most people invested in God’s bank.
I wondered why so many people would so easily agree to support such an evening. The answer came quick and easy: Because these parents, both of them teachers, invest in God’s bank every moment of every day. They make a major investment in the children and parents that pass through their classrooms. They are simply made that way and they cannot but give all that is in them to others. How many children (and parents) are on the right road today because they walked part of the way with these two teachers!
These two people understand what it means to give back, amidst, but also as a result of, Boeta, and in a way some of the interest earned on that was paid out that evening. Not that is why they do it. No, out of gratefulness that God has chosen them they invest bit by bit in God’s bank every moment of the day.
Investment in God’s bank is not only money. Yes, it’s money too, but it is also time and energy. Let’s say it again: Because God reached out to us first, because God is good to us, because we’re not standing at the edge of the cliff anymore, which is why we want to invest in God’s bank with everything in us.
The Monday after the dance we went to pick up the last items at the hall. The caretaker brought us an expensive cell phone. “Here you go! I picked it up under a chair. I would never be able to live with my conscience. Saturday evening, Boeta came to me, took my hand and thanked me.”

How can you invest today?
Where can you invest today?
How will you make time for it?
Father, we have so much to be grateful for. Please help each of us to be ready to do good to others the way You do good to us. Teach us to invest in Your bank, because all we have, we received from You. Amen.
