God's word in today's world

Going mad?

When do people lose it? Sometimes when your circumstances become too much to deal with. Then it may happen that you grab onto anything that can help you keep your head above water – or sometimes you just give up.

I know there were times in my life when I just ran around wildly, like a crazy, headless chicken. I suspect those were times when I did not really make time for God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit in my life.

If I could just more often ignore the own self and make time for God to rule: 19They’re completely out of touch with the source of life, Christ, who puts us together in one piece, whose very breath and blood flow through us. He is the Head and we are the body.

The image of the headless chicken running around in circles makes sense to me. Without Jesus who is in control of our lives, we make choices every day that do not really make sense.

Stand back and look at your life. Some of what I see, hurts. Some was simply stupid. Some simply put the brakes on even more. If I could only choose again – this time not with myself as the leader, but Jesus. Wow, I could have saved myself and others a lot of hurt and hardship!

There are many moments in our lives, the church, the government, the world, where we can see that decisions were taken without Jesus guiding them. Chaos! Indeed, the worst is when the church (which is all of us), often without us realising it, do things in which Jesus is not involved at al.

My heart aches for a friend who is such a beautiful child of God, but because his wife feels he is not on the same “level” spiritually as her, he doesn’t make it in her eyes. Religion is pulling them apart. Is that what Jesus would have wanted? Certainly not.

Remember: 19He is the Head and we are the body. We can grow up healthy in God only as he nourishes us.

I wonder if the growth of the church is a barometer that indicates whether God is still being allowed to ensure that everything goes well? Maybe I shouldn’t ask this question; it may just upset some people…

The thing is, Christianity is not rocket science. You don’t need to have a degree in something to know how to live. It’s simple: Make Jesus the head of your being. Live a life that shows his grace. God will equip you and you will grow. You will become a strong, tree that will withstand the storms and give shelter to those who may be struggling.

Do not run around like a headless chicken today.

Scripture

Colossians 2:18-19

Reflection

Are you running around like a headless chicken?

What place does Jesus have in your life?

How can you give Jesus a more significant space in your life?

Prayer

Jesus, I need You! The whole body grows from You. We are nothing without You. We cannot function without You. Thank you for taking the lead and thank You for teaching me how to live. Amen.
