God's word in today's world

God wants to use you

The book Hebrews was written for readers who knew the history of God’s involvement with his people very well. They knew the Old Testament and were familiar with the customs.

They also probably knew what role the high priest played in that time. The author wants to use the image of the high priest to refer to what Jesus came to do here on earth. However, because the author worries that the readers will no longer remember what the high priest’s role was, he quickly summarises what the high priests used to do.

Let’s read it together:

1Every high priest selected to represent men and women before God and offer sacrifices for their sins should be able to deal gently with their failings …

The high priest had an important job. He basically acted as a cushion between God and the people. He had to kneel down before God for the wrong things that the Israelites had done. He had to beg God not to punish the Israelites for the wrong things they had done.

2… since he knows what it’s like from his own experience.

But the high priest also understood what the Israelites were going through. He couldn’t judge and reprimand them, because he also had feet of clay. He too slipped and fell. He knew how difficult it was to remain upright when the winds of temptation were blowing so strongly.

3But that also means that he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as the peoples’.

I really understand what this is all about too. I know how much I struggle. I know what stupid choices I’ve made. The movie of my life also plays out repeatedly in front of my eyes, showing the places where I’ve fallen on my face. I see my sin and it makes me feel bad.

And then I wonder how God can appoint me to explain his Word to others.

I’ve learnt an important lesson from the preacher, Rick Warren. Every single time before he starts preaching, he prays: “Father, forgive the sins of your preacher of your Word”. I pray this too, because I know my baggage.

Many use this as an excuse. Lord, do You know how much wrong I’ve done in my life? I can’t open my mouth.

But I’ve got news for you. Like God used the sinful high priest, like He uses sinful preachers, He wants to use you to be a light in the dark world.

At work, at home, in a hospital bed, on the farm or on the street, be God’s light in your own way. God uses crooked sticks to hit straight.

Scripture
Hebrews 5:1-6

Reflection
How much sin have you collected?
Do you think God wants to use you?
Where does God want to use you?

Prayer
Father, I sin so much. I’m surprised You want to use me. But I’m willing. Please give me the strength and wisdom to make a difference where You call me to do so and to be Your light in the darkness. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
