God's word in today's world

God is your competitive advantage

In the business sector businesses ask a very simple question: What makes us better than our competitors? Why would our clients buy from us rather than our competitors? Are our prices and our service better or is it because our prices are affordable? This is called the ‘competitive advantage’. It’s important for every business to know what its competitive advantage in the market is and to nurture and develop this advantage. Then it has a much better chance to survive in a dangerous economic landscape.

We must also know what our competitive advantage in life is. Because we are children of God, it doesn’t mean that we have the inside track. It doesn’t mean that we are exempted from problems on the road of life. Actually, I would have to say on the contrary! If we are outspoken children of the living, chances are that we will rather experience strong winds on the road.

Then we need something to hold onto. When relationships collapse around me, when those I love most hurt me, when suddenly my dream disappear like mist before the sun, when my finances fail, when problems keep rolling in and I feel as if I need to pull the plug on life, there must be something I can hold onto or grab hold of, knowing that it won’t break under pressure. I need a competitive advantage. Something that will keep my head above the waves. Something that will keep me upright in the dangerous landscape of life we have to travel day by day.

Paul was familiar with dangerous landscapes. He was familiar with sleeping in prison many nights. He was familiar with the winds of death coming down on him time after time. He was familiar with criticism from those he loved. He was familiar with loved ones going against him, but he kept holding on. He held onto God. He believed that God had put him precisely in that position. He believed that God would come through for him. God was Paul’s competitive advantage. God was the advantage that he enjoyed that others didn’t have. 1Since God has so generously let us in on what he is doing, we’re not about to throw up our hands and walk off the job just because we run into occasional hard times.

Paul also had problems. Yes, even this great man of God who had preached so enthusiastically about God and left no stone unturned to spread the Gospel, even he had problems. Big problems. Many problems. His life was constantly in danger. But every time he got up with a song in his heart. Why? Because he saw the bigger picture. He knew he was precisely where God wanted him to be. He was doing precisely what he needed to do. It did not guarantee a smooth road, but he had an advantage compared to others. God was on his side. Even in the midst of storm winds God was still good to him. God is the One he could go to and where he could rest. He got his strength from God, he got his wisdom to see and understand the bigger picture from God.

My friend, this competitive advantage is not only available to the big men and women of God. No, it is also available for you and me. We can also have peace amidst the storms and the hurt and the suffering. God is there for every one of us. God is the rock that can never be shaken. God wants to be good for each of us. We must just get to Him.

I really wish I could tell you that you will never have to face problems, put problems are part of life. What I can say is that you enjoy an advantage. That advantage is God. Hold onto that. Hold onto God with everything inside you. Believe that God will come through for you. Go and sit at his feet. He will bless you with the water. Then you can stand up again and squarely face the world, because your competitive advantage walks with you.

Reflection

How big are your storms?

Do you believe that God has a plan for you?

Do you believe that God is with you?

Prayer

Father, I really needed this one now, because some days I don’t know where to hide. I’m tired of being under attack. Sometimes I simply don’t have the strength to get up again. Thank You for this message that You are there for me. Please help me get up again to face life with You. Amen
