God's word in today's world

God is behind the curtains

I’ve told the story before of how four of us went to visit another friend in Australia. We had a great time together with lots of sports. Amongst others, we spent a week on a yacht near the Great Barrier Reef.

We all had specific duties on the yacht and mine was to man the anchor. I learnt so many things about anchors. I learnt that it had to be lowered and pulled up again. And there are many things one shouldn’t do, because you can damage the boat.

The most important thing, however, is to make sure that the anchor is dropped in the right spot, because of there is nothing for the anchor to hold onto, it’s no use. Then the boat will be blown further and further away and get into trouble.

In the same way, our anchor of faith should be safely hooked onto something. It’s no use having an anchor for our faith, but it’s not hooked onto something. Our anchor is hooked onto the hope of heaven.

19-20It’s an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God where Jesus, running on ahead of us, has taken up his permanent post as high priest for us …

Here the author refers to the holiest part of the temple that the people of God had always seen as God’s place of residence. The high priest could only enter this place once a year.

The New English Translation puts it like this: 19We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast, which reaches inside behind the curtain.

God’s people held onto the hope that God was behind those curtains. In time hard ties and when they were attacked or nearly died of hunger, when their dreams broke into pieces, they held onto that belief knowing that God was behind the curtains.

God would never have forsaken his people. Even when they were difficult. Even though He was sometimes so angry with them. He forgave them each and every time and took them into His arms again. The people of God had dropped their anchor there. Behind the curtains where they believed, knew, God was waiting for them.

The place where we drop anchor has not changed. We have to drop anchor there where God lives. In the presence of God. Because our anchor will never slip out of there. No matter how big the storms. No matter how strong the powers wanting to pull you off. The power holding your anchor behind the curtains is simply too strong.

When you put your hope in God and know that He is busy making your plans work out behind the curtains, your ship will never run aground. When your anchor, your hope, is in God, you can walk out into the world with your head held high. Even if you shake in the face of your circumstances, you will know that you will not be overcome, because God is behind the curtains and He protects you everywhere you go.

Scripture
Hebrews 6:18-20

Reflection
Are you close to the rocks of life?
Where have you dropped your anchor?
Where is God?

Prayer
Our Father, You are the great Power. You maintain everything. You hold your children tightly. Please help me fix my anchor in You forever. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
