God's word in today's world

Finding true happiness

You can possess everything in the world. You can have all the money your heart desires. You can own the biggest, most beautiful house with the fastest, reddest car in the garage. You could’ve established a business empire. You can have the most beautiful, thinnest or strongest spouse or partner. You can be the most famous person in the world, and still lack happiness.

These things do not automatically include true happiness. It’s not part of any default setting. On the contrary, some of the richest, most beautiful, leading business people, are dead unhappy.

This reminds me of the song, Looking for love in all the wrong places.  Maybe we should write a song called: Looking for joy in all the wrong places.

A friend of mine went looking for real joy night after night. He woke in the mornings not knowing who was beside him in bed, even less how he got there, or how many white lines he’d snorted the night before. And still joy eluded him.

Are you also looking for real joy? Does joy remain out of your reach? I wonder if you are also looking in the wrong places.

You know, suffering comes knocking at every door. A season (or seasons) in your life that arrives unannounced at your front door.

An old Jewish saying goes, Blessed is the man who endures temptations, for there is no man whom God does not test in this way (Shemoth Rabbah, sec. 31, vol. 129).

Rich men and poor men, those who are doing well and those who are suffering, all will enter the dark season sometime and the way they deal with it is where the secret of true joy is to be found.

12Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life.

I know I’ve failed this test several times. I know I’ve thrown my toys out of the cot many times, and, yes, joy kept hiding.

It’s not easy to remain upright when the storms of life hit you. Fortunately, we don’t have to do it alone. The Holy Spirit is there to help us. We must simply allow Him to pass wisdom onto us.

When we look at the dark season through the lens of wisdom, we realise we’re not alone. Then we know that we can indeed get through it, and when we reach the other side of darkness, real joy, the kind of joy that flows from your innermost self, is waiting around the corner.

James 1:12

Is happiness hiding from you too?
What do you do with the storms in your life?
Do you now realise where true happiness is to be found?

Father, I hear that one can find real joy when you pass the test, but I’m struggling. My knees are buckling under the heavy load, and yes, joy is hiding. Help me allow the Holy Spirit to work in me. Help me to find wisdom so that it can give me the strength to find happiness. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
