Do not forget your talents
The talents we have were not just dropped randomly so that a few fell on some people and the rest on the ground. Every person is specifically blessed with a talent or a number of talents and God did that.
Listen what is being said here: The talent you have was specifically given to you because that is what God wanted. Each of us is holy, set apart for God, and we have to use our talents to work for God right where we are.
It is actually both a warning and a command: 14And that special gift of ministry you were given when the leaders of the church laid hands on you and prayed—keep that dusted off and in use.
Do not hide your talents. Don’t invent excuses why you should rather be doing something else than utilising your talents. Don’t let the devil make you forget about your talents. Don’t be lazy to make your talents work. Don’t use the postpone excuse, because as the saying goes: Procrastination is the thief of time.
This is a serious warning sign on our life journey. It is so serious that one commentator (Matthew Henry) said: “The gifts of God will wither if they be neglected.” Your talent, your gift, will run out, disappear, if you do not use it. This is a scary perspective. If you do not activate your talent often, you will lose the know-how and skill to work with it.
And now I can hear people say that they were going in the wrong direction and never used their talent. Does this mean that their talent no longer exists, has been lost forever and they now have to muddle along without it? No, I don’t think so. I believe in God’s grace too strongly.
Even if I hid my talent away in the cupboard and never used it, God will help me to take it out after all these years, dust it down, and immediately use it fully. It’s almost like cycling. They always say that even if you hadn’t been on a bicycle for years, when you get on one again, it’s like you just got off.
The fact is that each of us has been specially chosen by God to act on a specific set of talents throughout life. Some have one, others a few. These talents are the things we do easily. It happens naturally. We like doing these things.
We have talents so that we can serve others. To make life easier for them. God wants to use us as his agents. He wants to use the tools he lent to us to make a difference in the lives of other people.
These talents weren’t distributed arbitrarily. God gave it to you specifically. You must realise how important this is. Work hard on it and be on the lookout for places where you can use your talents. And when the opportunity comes, grab it with both hands. It is a great privilege that God has chosen you to make a difference in someone’s life at that specific moment.
Do you know what your talents are?
Are your talents active?
Who needs your talents?
Lord, thank you for entrusting a few talents to me too. I want to be a good steward of those talents. Please open my eyes so that I can see where You want to use me to serve others. Amen.
