Sometimes I wonder why God still wants to have anything to do with me. Really. I feel I simply don’t make it. I pull in the wrong direction too often. I often fail the keep calm test. I’m more lukewarm than hot. I often do wat I know I shouldn’t do.
Then I wonder why God doesn’t spit me out. Actually, I feel I just don’t make it. I feel bad about what I do and what I don’t do. And I wonder what Peter is going to say when I arrive at the pearly gates.
Do you see the uncertainty all the wondering causes in my life? Maybe you too are wondering and maybe you too are overcome with uncertainty sometimes?
Well, we should actually make an appointment with ourselves, because we’re barking up the wrong tree. You see, our salvation is not concerned with what we do or don’t do. We’re actually not in the picture at all when it’s about the salvation of human beings. Only God and Jesus are in the picture when it’s about the salvation of mankind.
8… We can only keep on going, after all, by the power of God, who first saved us and then called us to this holy work. 9We had nothing to do with it. It was all his idea …
Do you see what it says here? Our salvation has nothing to do with what we accomplish here on earth. There are no external examiners with glasses on their noses and a clipboard in their hands giving us a mark out of 10 for our lives on earth. Those who get more than 5 make it. The others not. Well, I will certainly fall in the last group.
No, it doesn’t work like that. It’s God’s decision. That’s it! God overflows with love so much, He cannot but do this. Driven by love, surrounded by heaps and heaps of love, love flows from God, and He opens the gates of heaven so that they can never close again. For us, with our inconvenient sin.
Just because He wants to be good to us.
I can’t get my head around it. We humans will do something for someone who does good deeds, but we will push away and reject people who disappoint and hurt us again and again.
9… a gift prepared for us in Jesus long before we knew anything about it.
My reaction to this is wow! Like, high five, my word, jeepers, oh my! That is so right! I jump up and down, because God is so good! We don’t deserve the salvation we receive. Jesus comes and takes the punishment for the things we do.
So, let’s release the handbrake. Like the saying goes: Let your hair down. It means: to allow yourself to behave much more freely than usual and enjoy yourself. Yeah! Let’s live like people who’ve thrown down their burdens and are free. Let’s dance and sing and live God’s saving love in the world!
2 Timothy 1:8-10
How do you understand your involvement in your salvation?
How do you understand God’s involvement in your salvation?
How do you release your handbrake?
