God's word in today's world

Although I believe, I sometimes struggle

Sometimes I struggle to believe. What if God doesn’t exist? What if we die one day and nothing happens? No heaven. No life after death. Yes, sometimes doubt gets stuck in my mind.

It happens when I look around me and see all the hardship and hurt. How can people make such a mess of their lives? It happens when I listen to people who sound very clever and who laughingly spin stories about there being no Higher being than man. Man is God.

And then for a while I find myself wondering: What if…

And then I lose courage and want to go and curl up in a corner somewhere.

Fortunately, every time this happens God is faithful and pulls me from that hole. Then I proclaim out loud: 6That’s why we live with such good cheer. You won’t see us drooping our heads or dragging our feet! Cramped conditions here don’t get us down. We have to say this to one another. We must say that we live in an imperfect world. The devil and his cronies are hard at work trying to gain ground. And what a struggle it is! They will try every trick in the book to sow destruction. But we must not allow it to get the better of us.

No, with everything we have we must believe that God is in control. We must hold onto the promise that God is waiting for us. Grab it with both hands and hold on. Bite down and hold on: 7They only remind us of the spacious living conditions ahead. It’s what we trust in but don’t yet see that keeps us going. 8Do you suppose a few ruts in the road or rocks in the path are going to stop us? When the time comes, we’ll be plenty ready to exchange exile for homecoming. 9But neither exile nor homecoming is the main thing. Cheerfully pleasing God is the main thing, and that’s what we aim to do, regardless of our conditions.

Even if circumstances seem to say God does not exist, even if people come with one more story that God is just a fairy tale, we have to stand up with the authors of the Bible and fellow believers and say: We believe. We believe that Jesus rose from the dead and ascended to heaven and is sitting on the right hand of God today. Yes, I cannot explain everything, but I know in my heart that it is true. I believe it with my whole being.

When we re-confirm our faith, we must use our energy to find out exactly how God wants us to live and what He wants us to do. It is when we do the will of God that our faith in Him grows stronger and stronger. You see when we spend more time with God, we experience God more powerfully in our lives, and when we experience God, this in turn strengthens our faith.

Let’s go out today and believe with Paul and the people of Corinth that God prepares a place in heaven for everyone who believes in Him. Let’s believe with our whole heart that He has a special plan on earth for each of us. Let’s look for His will for us today and let’s go and live it. This will change the world!

Reflection

Do you sometimes doubt?

Do you believe in God’s existence?

Do you do God’s will?

Prayer

Father, please forgive me that I sometimes doubt Your existence. I know that You exist. I know how much You love each of us. Yes, I believe. Therefore, I want to go and show it by living according to Your will. Every minute of the day. Amen
